Beamish Trip – Year 6

In the last week before half term, Year 6 headed to Beamish Open Air Museum as part of their topic work, studying the Victorian Era.

The children were able to explore the museum, visiting the 1913 town (including the sweet shop!), using the period transport such as trams and open top buses. They then headed to the pit village where they had to investigate the death of a young boy who had died at the local colliery.

This really helped us to understand the impact of the child workforce on the families at that time. We were also shocked at the dangerous conditions children were working under.

Head Boy and Head Girl Presentations and Results

On Friday, the children of SS Peter and Paul were able to vote for this year’s head boy and head girl.

The candidates had all worked extremely hard with their campaign teams and put together some fantastic presentations, outlining their plans and ideas for our school and students.

Every presentation was extremely good and the candidates spoke with clarity and passion – they should all be very proud.

Year 6 Careers Day at St Joseph’s

This week, year 6 took part in a fantastic careers event, held at St Joseph’s Comprehensive.

The event  brought together representatives from many different industries and careers. The children were able to talk to representatives including: the merchant navy, the police, Sunderland A.F.C, Nurses and the NHS, scientists, vets, bakers, artists and animators, computer game design and many many more.

Our children loved asking questions and exploring the different props and equipment on show.

It was a truly inspiring morning and certainly gave our year 6 children lots to think about for their future careers!

Year 6 Maths – Problem Solving

Year 6 were set some tricky problems today as part of their maths lesson.

They had to work together to complete several problems – testing their reasoning and calculation skills.

Although some of the problems were solved quickly, the biggest challenge was explaining the solutions to the rest of the class!

Sustrans Cycling Year 6

Last week , year  6 had a great time – working with Claire from Sustrans.

Claire helped us to service and repair our bikes, ensuring they were safe to ride. She also taught us about cycle safety and identified many cycle routes in the local area.

As part of last weeks work with Sustrans, the children went on several bike rides to St Wilfrid’s. They met with members of the cycle club and even had a tour of the school!
